I think I might be impressed February 28, 2007

So I’m watching American Idol tonight and I see this trailer for a new Chris Rock movie called “I think I love my wife”. Now, nothing weird about that. Seems perfectly normal. What was weird was during the trailer I see a logo that looks very familiar. I knew at that instant it was the “UTV” Logo. United Television productions being this large production house in India and thats where I remember the logo from.  I initall thought some company ripped off the logo and is using it here but how likely is that???

I googled the company and found out that Disney acwuired a 14% stake in it last year and now ther decided on investing in Hollywood and “I think I love my wife” is going to be their first Hollywood venture.  For an Indian company to be producing a Hollywood film with Chris Rock in it seems really surreal and bizarre. That the movie looks awful…Chris rock doesn’t look very convincing as a married dude and it just seems like the movie is going to suck major ass, is a different subject.  But the fact that India’s UTV is producing this movie is really a sign of how times have changed. Its also a sign of how out of touch I am with going ons back home in India.  I can’t really help it, I can’t stay updated about most things happening back home, heck I hardly stay updated here!!

Anyways, here’s the trailer for “I think I love my wife”

When no news is good news February 27, 2007

I Can’t seem to watch the news on any of the TV channels here in Cleveland for any length of time. The news seems, well, for lack of a better term …worthless. I really don’t need to be informed about silly, trivial local matters such as a puppy dog not being fed two consecutive meals at a local shelter and how a local high school is going to open an hour early to make up for time lost during the blizzard last year.  Maybe its that I’m too new and too forein to this place that it seems that such matters would be covered on the news. In any case I rarely feel informed, educated or enlightened about anything after hearing the news. Also the nightly news will be clogged with news of Britneys latest escapades and the never ending saga of Anna Nicole Smith.

I have to admit, I did watch with some degree of interest the news following ANna nicoles death, with the bizarre court proceeedings and then the silly vidoes, one of them with her Indian doctor “Friend”. ANd now though, its gotten nauseating and sickening.  Probably one of the main reasons I stopped watching the news. I prefer to read the online papers.  I dont know if its just me but I’m getting the feeling CNN.com is turning into a tabloid kinda paper with more videos to bizarre trivial stories than actual reading material.  Its very annoying. At work I like to read the news from time to time but all you’ll get sometimes on th CNN.com headlines are links to videos, I can’t play fucking videos in the office.  I’m going to switch to the BBC website and get a more worldly perspectiv on things from tomorrow. Just like I’ve been used to for all these years. Cleveland dog kennels be damned,

Speaking of the BBC, I came across this major screw up the BBC caused last year where they mistook an African dude who was coming to the BBC for an interview for an accountant as an IT expert and interviewed him on air for a few minutes.  I laughed so hard warching this, just one more reason I’m in love with Youtube. Check out the video below:

How amazing is the amazing race February 26, 2007

I caught this seasons all star version of The Amazing Race today. They brought back all the popular teams from past seasons which I thought was an awesome idea.  I’m sure a ot of amazing race fans would have been wondering what happened to the pairs of teams in the past seasons. I know I wondered what Team Guido, Donny & Oswald, Charla and Mirna were upto, and it was great to see these guys back in action. They seem to be doing just as well as they did when they were first on the show. For someone who watched practically every episode of the first six seasons, I ‘ve seen all the teams on this season in action previously so its particu;arly sweet seeing them back on again.  Also, it reminds of the time when I used to watch the Amazing Race back home.  I remember my pulse racing and being so excited at the advetures on the show. It had funny cast members, travel adventure and excitement, all the ingredients of a great reality TV show. Now I’ve seen every big reality show there is and funnily I’ve enjoyed most of them, but nothing and I mean NOTHING comes close to how good the Amazing race really is.  I sure will try to make time to catch all epsiodes of this season every week.

On a completely unrealted note,  I’m currently listening (and enjoying) this song by Anna Nalick:

ANNA NALICK

Breathe (2 AM)

2 AM and she calls me ’cause I’m still awake,
Can you help me unravel my latest mistake,
I don’t love him, winter just wasn’t my season
Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize,
Hypocrites, you’re all here for the very same reason

‘Cause you can’t jump the track,we’re like cars on a cable
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button girl,
So cradle your head in your hands
And breathe, just breathe,
Woah breathe, just breathe

May he turn 21 on the base at Fort Bliss
Just a day, he sat down to the flask in his fist,
Ain’t been sober, since maybe October of last year.
Here in town you can tell he’s been down for a while,
But my God it’s so beautiful when the boy smiles,
Wanna hold him, maybe I’ll just sing about it.

Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable,
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button boys,
So cradle your head in your hands,
And breathe, just breathe,
Woah breathe, just breathe

There’s a light at each end of this tunnel, you shout
‘Cause you’re just as far in as you’ll ever be out
These mistakes you’ve made, you’ll just make them again
If you only try turning around.

2 AM and I’m still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, its no longer
Inside of me, threatening the life it belongs to
And I feel like I’m naked in front of the crowd
Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you’ll use them, however you want to

Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable,
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand.
And breathe, just breathe
Woah breathe, just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe.

If you need a friend,
don’t look to a stranger,
You know in the end,
I’ll always be there.

And when you’re in doubt,
and when you’re in danger,
Take a look all around,
and I’ll be there.

I’m sorry, but I’m just thinking of the right words to say.
I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be.
But if you’ll wait around a while, I’ll make you fall for me,
I promise, I promise you I will.

So you had a good day February 23, 2007

Today was a good day at work. The caffeine kicked in bright and early and kept me very awake till the evening. But the coffee wasn’t the only reason it was a good day.  I felt like work was getting a bit routine and cumbersome, and then today I sat in at a meeting, completely understood everything that was explained to me and then I went ahead and created a report which I thought kicked ass.  I long for more days like these. At the end of the day I think everyone wants to do their job well and being appreciated is acknowledgement of this good work.

I’m still in the student mode, absorbing everything I can at every opportunity. I never realised how much I liked learning till I did my MBA and I also realise now that the learning never really stops. You can learn as much or as little about the world around you as you want to but when you’re as curios as I am, chances are you’re gonna wanna learn as much as possible!!!

Ever receive a really crappy birthday present? February 21, 2007

I came home from work this evening to find a package waiting for me. It was from my brother in England. He sends me two silk ties. They’re awfully nice, really sexy and all. The problem being, I don’t wear ties to work. Nobody does. Besides, who the fuck gifts anyone ties in this day and age? The lack of thought behind the gift kinda threw me into a fit of rage.   I think everyone knows the relation I currently “enjoy” with my brother right now, and to make matters worse he had to go ahead and give me the most thoughtless gift in human history.  I’m all for good natured gifters making honest mistakes but this shit is off the hook.  It tells me a whole story those two ties, of how we haven’t spoken this year, of how he and his stupid fiancee keep treating me like shit. Makes me wanna go tear up the ties, burn em and make a video of it and upload it on youtube for him to see.

So I’ve been bored out of my mind this weekend. I was looking forward to this one last long weekend to head back to BG for a couple of days but first it was the fucked up weather and then there was the problem with the local enterprise rent a car people saying that they ran out of cars this weekend. Just my luck. What made it worse was this was my birthday weekend. I’m not one to make a big noise of birthdays and anniversaries but somewhere deep beneath you hope you can do something to mark the occasion.  Well, this year I didn’t. So that blowed big time.

Haven’t been upto much this weekend. Watched insane numbers of videos on youtube and read shitloads of websites. Didnt make much progress on my new blog. Kinda ran out of steam on that one. Probaby had someting to do with the sucky weather this weekend.

SO I’m 26 now. Don’t really know if I’m gonna turn a corner having completed quarter of a century on planet earth.  Who knows.  I don’t see any major reason to but you never know. Thats life. Gonna have a 4 day work week this week, so that should be interesting.  Gotta go get stuff ready for tomorrow. Not really in the blogging mood right now.

Valentine’s Day Storm February 14, 2007

Coming back home last night, it was the coldest bus trip I had ever experienced.  5 Degree temperatures with 35MPH winds and 6 inches of snow. It was no less than hell. When I woke up this morning, things seemed to have gotten worse overnight. The view outside my window looked something like this :
img_2142.JPG

It was pretty spectacular really. Having never experienced a blizzard ever, this was pretty memorable for me. Ofcourse I couldn’t make it to work today. So I called up my boss to let him know. I have no idea how he reached the office. Pretty amazing.

So the storm is the significant event for Valentines day 2007. The lesser said about Valentines day the better. Maybe I’m just being bitter but I’ve never been a big fan and I’m glad its not such a big deal here as it was back home. Yes, quite ironic.

I’ve been looking at some CMS options for Blogging the past few days. Although I love WordPress and I’ve become used to its control panel and the way it looks, works and feels. The truth is I realy don’t have much time to re-learn CSS and modifyf the templates etc. as I need to.  I guess that rules out WordPress as an option.  My search led me to “Squarespace”.  Squarespace seems like a special CMS which takes out a lot of the work required to customize a template and yet it alows you the option to manually  adjust the CSS. Overall I like the look and feel of the dashboard. It would take a bit of getting used to but it has a lot of positive points so that makes it the forerunner at this point.  I’ve been reading some reveiws for Squarespace ad they seem to be largely positive, by far.  I was looking for some glaringly obvious shortcomings in this offering but there doesn’t seem to be any.

Looks like I’m going to be snowed in this weekend, so no going to BG.  I hope to meet with some friends this weekend though. Have to see if those plans go ahead too, with this sort of weather, who knows! It is my birthday on Saturday and I turn 26. Might not be a bad day to officially launch the new blog. But I’m not sure I can get everthing
together for the launch so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Excited about Web 2.0 February 13, 2007

I’m excited about Web 2.0. The next net. The second coming of the dotcom boom. Whatever you might want to call it, there is so much buzz around new web ventures. Unlike back in 1999 there seems to be much more method to the current madness. Anyways, I’m going to save an entire post on this topic on my new blog whenever that launches. For now though, this video on Youtube explains the Web2.0 phenomenon really well.  I get excited watching the video. What a nerd. Oh well!

A business writer in the making February 11, 2007

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about my career and where I’d like to go with the experience I’m getting currently.  Admittedly, the options are many and the prospects bright. However, it’s what you chose to make of your career and the heights you want to reach that will determine where you end up eventually.  I’ve never been the one to plan anything in my life, until well into my 20’s, and I stil like to keep my options open and remain as felxible as possible when it comes to a “career”.  Having varied interests, while being a good thing, can make decision making a nightmare when it comes to career choices. At this point I’d fancy a career as a news reporter, travel writer, feature photographer,..you get the idea.

Considering my background and my current field of work I figured I’d like to be a Business writer some point down the line. I’ve been playing with the dea of starting another blog.  I feel the time is right, considering I am out of school with an MBA, Web 2.0 is making things feel like they were back in 1999, and India for once is seeing phenomenal growth rates, I believe I’m in a position where I can contribute comments and thoughts towards topics such as these, and that there might be a viable reader base who would be interested in what I have to say.

Though I’ve never published a  professional or business blog earlier, I can tell from my personal blogging attempts that this requires loads of dedication and you have to be virtually married to the cause to see the blog succeed. I have every intention to do so with this venture. The weekdays might not leave me much time, but I believe sparing 30 minutes to sum up information I’ve acquired during the day and enter it into a blog post might be a good thing for me!

I’m not going to jump and start off the blog immediately. I’m taking my time to see the various options I have with regards to web hosts, CMS solutions etc. etc. Its all there, but I have to make an educated choice regarding these.  I’m really leaning towards the idea of buying some young bloggers template and starting off with that. In any case, it gives me something worthwhile to look forward to. As a beginning point, I will update my About me section on this webpage to more accurately reflect my current situation and future ambitions.

The Maxtor HD and stuff February 10, 2007

maxtor_60gb_hd.jpgSo after two unsuccessfull delivery attempts at my apartment, the Maxtor 60GB external HD I ordered finally arrived at the office, where I had to redirect the delivery to.  It turned out to be a lat smaller and lighter than I had expected it to be, which is a good thing I guess! Anyways, aside from its sexy looks and neat packaging, this lightweight box isn’t really the sexiest gadget a guy could ask for. Its essentially a a BIG jump drive. Like 20 normal jump drives put together. Anyways, I’m glad I ordered it.  The idea behind ordering it is that I hope to backup stuff from my laptop onto this bad boy and hopefully that should take the load off the laptop. There isn’t much space left on it anymore!! Just playing around with this thing made me wonder if these things will ever become wireless.  That way I could delete the shit straight off my computer AND have access to a wireless hard drive which I would keep lying around the house somewhere.  Oh well, we can always dream I suppose.

The weather cleared up a bit in Cleveland today. My friend Polona and her husband happened to drop by so I met with them for lunch, taking a bit of an early lunch break from work. We went to the tower city centre which has a really cool mall in there.  It was a little crazy over there when I went there the last time, it was after work and it was dark and just not as nice as it seemed today.  I walked around after lunch a bit, thinking to myself, Cleveland must be really nice during the summertime. Its really not so appealing when its half frozen as it is now but I imagine it to be a lot more visually appealing when the sun comes (and stays!) out for an extended period.

So I just heard Drew Barrymore on the Tonight show with Jay Leno say that she’s a fan of 80’s music.  I like Drew Barrymore even more now!!! I just can’t seem to find enough people to say they like music from that era. Although I hear it at every mall, supermarket and store I go to. 80’s music is alive and well and liked by many people but despite that fact people still refuse to admit they like it. This is because people can be real assholes. Fake ones.

More at a later time…

So, I just published feeds for my Blog on My Yahoo! I’m hoping to sttract some amount of search engine traffic on here. I need to get more posts on here more often too for that to happen.

I’ll have a full fledged post on my ideas soon enough. For now, its back to work though.
